Images of the First World War battlefields of the Gallipoli Peninsula, where thousands of Allied and Turkish soldiers died in Winston Churchill’s doomed campaign to seize control of the vital Dardanelles Strait. Here a young Ottoman commander named Mustafa Kemal, later known as Kemal Ataturk, first made his name. Eceabat is a friendly fishing port and a base for Australians and New Zealanders making the pilgrimage to the battlefields. A fine Ottoman castle, defending the Dardanelles, dominates the nearby village of Kilitbahir.
